Christopher Holly 4th Grade Teacher Addison Mizner Elementary
School nominated Mr. and Mrs. Earl Moore of Shaffer Trucking
for the Trucker Buddy Driver of the Month. Earl and Karalee
Moore have contributed to the academic development and growth
of my student's across all subject areas. On a classroom visit Earl
and Karalee modeled how they plan, budget, and prepare for trips.
Thus demonstrating how they use math, science, social studies,
reading, and writing together to make their job successful. Students
now understand how important the skills taught in school are in
accomplishing a task or solving a problem in the real world. Earl
and Karalee have helped me create a purpose for learning.
Earl and Karalee write 3 to 5 post cards a week explaining where they are,
where they are going, and what they are carrying. The kids are always amazed
at the different kinds of payloads they carry and transport. The transportation
piece fits in well with our social studies and math curriculum, everything
from map skills, to identify locations, measurements, and other areas. Earl
and Karalee ask questions like how long should it take us to get from point
A to point B going 60 mph. The first person to get it right gets to keep the
Puffin stuffed animal at their desk for the day. The puffin stuffed animal
was a gift from the Moore's. Kids always love a challenge and Earl and Karalee
are always trying to get them to think.
The class will send emails, post cards, or letters updating them on what they
will be studying and Earl and Karalee always come up with something that ties
in with the subject. For example the class was studying the Civil War and
Earl and Karalee were in Virginia, they gathered up materials on the Civil
War and sent us pictures of the reenacted battle at New Market, Virginia.
All the little things they do add up and give my students connections to information
that is taught and making it purposeful. Earl and Karalee make learning purposeful,
meaningful, and easier to understand!
Congratulations to Earl and Karalee for being selected Trucker Buddy of the
Month for June 2009.
